The inspiration for this painting came from a crumbling Palazzo façade facing the Grand Canal in Venice. A faded fresco ran almost the whole length of the building. The subject matter of the fresco itself was too far away and too faded to be clearly distinguishable, although it was clearly religious and in a Renaissance style. Wanting to recreate this 'impression', I chose to use an image which would also reflect upon the religious and artistic cultural heritage of Venice itself. Using a little artistic license, a detail from Titian's ‘Assumption' from Venice’s own Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari has been suggested.
